The Implementation of Florida’s Controversial Health Care Legislation Puts Transgender Individuals at Risk

Imagine a sunny life in Florida for transgender individuals, only to be blindsided by a new law that disrupts their access to proper health care. While much attention has been given to the impact on trans kids, it turns out that adults are also bearing the brunt of this legislation.

Take, for instance, the stories of Eli and Lucas. These transgender men found themselves caught off guard by the repercussions of a bill signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. Despite closely monitoring the developments at the Legislature, they were not adequately informed about the devastating effects hidden within the legal jargon.

The consequences are far-reaching and force difficult decisions upon Eli, Lucas, and many others like them. Lucas lost access to hormone treatment after his Orlando clinic closed its gender-affirming care services in compliance with the new law. With several additional anti-LGBTQ+ bills potentially on the horizon, the couple is contemplating whether it is worth staying in Florida amidst all the turmoil.

Lucas shared the overwhelming impact, stating, “I just received a promotion at work, which I will likely have to give up… I am losing everything, except for Eli and my pets, as we consider moving away. This was not a decision I made lightly.”

Furthermore, trans adults now face legal obstacles before being able to access necessary health care treatments. They must obtain informed consent and seek a doctor’s approval for any transition-related care, but now, these consultations must be conducted in person. This has shifted the norm for those accustomed to seeing nurse practitioners or utilizing telehealth services in a negative and challenging manner.

Adding to the distress, Florida’s new laws empower doctors and pharmacists to refuse treatment to transgender individuals. This creates an even harsher reality for trans adults, as Kate Steinle from FOLX Health, a telemedicine company serving trans individuals, aptly describes it as “devastating.”

The consequences of this legislation ripple across Florida’s health clinics. SPEKTRUM Health, Lucas’ previous care provider, can no longer offer gender-affirming services. With approximately 95,000 transgender adults residing in Florida, the state finds itself in a dire situation, second only to California in terms of its transgender population.

Lana Dunn from SPEKTRUM suggests that Florida is seen as an experimental ground, testing how far they can push the limits on transgender rights. She estimates that around 80% of trans adults relied on nurse practitioners for their health care, leaving them abandoned and hopeless.

Eli, reflecting on their unexpected predicament, shares a sobering thought, “I never imagined it could happen to us this way, so quickly.”

Moving forward, Eli and Lucas are considering relocating to Minnesota, pending financial circumstances and finding a home suitable for their pets. Lucas, on the other hand, is left to face an uncertain future without hormone treatments, fearing the resurgence of his menstrual cycle. He candidly states, “It will be extremely challenging mentally to experience changes in my body that don’t align with my identity.”
