Ukraine Peace Talks in Saudi Arabia Seek Resolution Without Russia’s Participation

Representatives from Around 40 Countries Gather in Saudi Arabia for Talks on Ukraine

A significant peace summit on Ukraine is currently taking place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with the participation of officials from approximately 40 countries. Notably, Russia is not taking part in these discussions, raising questions about the inclusivity of the talks.

Ukrainian President Zelensky Welcomes World Leaders and Emphasizes Global Impact

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warmly greeted the representatives attending the summit in Jeddah and acknowledged the global implications of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These talks, initiated on Saturday, are particularly concerned with addressing the severe impact of rising food prices in developing nations, a direct consequence of the war.

Efforts Concentrated on Food Security and Implementing a Peace Formula

President Zelensky emphasized the urgency of prioritizing food security concerns during the summit. The livelihoods of millions of people in Africa, Asia, and other regions heavily rely on the swift implementation of the peace formula outlined during these discussions.

Withdrawal of Russia’s Grain Deal Exacerbates Food Price Increase

The recent surge in food prices can be attributed to Russia’s decision to pull out of a grain deal brokered by the United Nations. This agreement had facilitated the transport of Ukrainian agricultural products through the Black Sea to regions grappling with widespread hunger.

Optimism Surrounds the Peace Summit’s Potential to End Russian Invasion

President Zelensky remains optimistic that the ongoing summit, where key principles to halt the Russian invasion are being discussed, will lay the foundation for a larger “peace summit” in the coming months. The intention of this upcoming gathering is to endorse the initiatives set forth during the current talks.

Ukraine’s Proposal to Resolve the Conflict and Russia’s Reaction

Ukraine had previously put forward a plan to end the conflict, which involved Russia respecting Ukraine’s territories and withdrawing its troops from the claimed annexed areas. However, Russia rejected this proposal, although it expressed intentions to monitor the developments at the peace summit.

China’s Involvement as a Neutral Party

Despite facing criticism for its perceived lack of condemnation towards Russia’s invasion, China maintains its neutral stance in the conflict. As a sign of its commitment to seeking a political solution in Ukraine, China has sent its Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs, Li Hui, to the summit, aiming to play a constructive role in the negotiations.
