According to a recent national poll conducted by Emerson College, former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden and Green Party presidential candidate Cornell West in a hypothetical three-way race for the White House. Out of the registered voters surveyed, 42 percent would vote for Trump, giving him a slight edge over Biden who has 41 percent support. West captures five percent of the respondents, while thirteen percent remain undecided.
In a head-to-head matchup, Trump holds a narrow lead of 0.7 percentage points, resulting in a tie at 44 percent after rounding. This data suggests that Trump’s support base is more resilient compared to Biden’s, as mentioned by Spencer Kimball, the Executive Director of Polling at Emerson College. As a demonstration of Trump’s strong base, the poll even explored a three-way race with pop superstar Taylor Swift.
The survey, which gathered data from 1000 registered voters, including 465 likely GOP primary voters, was conducted between August 16-17, 2023. The poll also examined the Republican presidential primary, and it revealed that Trump maintains a significant advantage with 56 percent support. However, former Gov. Ron DeSantis has seen a decline in his support, dropping from 21 percent in June to ten percent, placing him in a tie with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy who has gained eight points since June.
Kimball observed that DeSantis supporters, particularly among Republican voters with postgraduate degrees, are shifting their support to Ramaswamy. This demographic used to be a part of DeSantis’s base. On the other hand, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Gov. Chris Christie hold three percent of support each, while former Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. Tim Scott are tied at two percent. Conservative radio host Larry Elder and former Gov. Asa Hutchinson round out the field with one percent each, and over ten percent of respondents remain undecided.
