Morning Consult Poll: Trump Maintains Strong Favorability Among GOP Field, DeSantis Receives Mixed Reviews

According to the latest survey by Morning Consult, former President Donald Trump continues to hold the highest favorability rating among Republican primary candidates. Despite facing ongoing legal challenges, 76 percent of respondents expressed a favorable opinion of Trump, while 22 percent held an unfavorable view.

Interestingly, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is often considered a strong contender in the race, falls behind Trump in terms of favorability. 65 percent of respondents reported a favorable view of DeSantis. However, it is worth noting that DeSantis also received a higher unfavorable rating compared to Trump, with 23 percent expressing an unfavorable opinion of the governor.

The survey also shed light on anti-woke businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, who received a favorable rating of 55 percent. However, 20 percent of respondents admitted to not being familiar with him.

Former Vice President Mike Pence maintained a 48 percent favorability rating, but had the second-highest unfavorable rating among the listed candidates at 40 percent. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott both enjoyed positive favorability ratings of 45-18 and 47-12, respectively.

On the other hand, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie received the lowest favorability rating among GOP candidates, with 47 percent viewing him unfavorably compared to 28 percent who held a favorable view.

The survey, which took place from August 10 to 13, 2023 and involved 810 potential GOP primary voters, comes at a time when Trump is facing a new indictment as part of an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Despite previous indictments, Trump’s favorability ratings have consistently risen, indicating that this latest development is unlikely to have a negative impact on his support among his followers. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.
