Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also eyeing a run for the presidency in 2024, has unveiled his ambitious plan to significantly downsize the US federal government. In an interview on Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” DeSantis declared his intention to abolish several departments, including Education, Commerce, Energy, and even the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Challenging the Rise of ‘Woke Ideology’
While DeSantis is aware that his plan relies heavily on congressional support, he has made it clear that he is prepared to take action even without legislative backing. In the face of any opposition from Congress, he intends to repurpose these federal agencies to combat what he sees as the growing influence of “woke ideology” and left-wing infiltration in American institutions.
DeSantis Responds to MacCallum’s Question
The proposal was prompted by a question from host Martha MacCallum, who asked if the governor was considering eliminating any government agencies. DeSantis responded affirmatively, citing previous conservative discussions about dismantling certain departments.
Proposed Reforms for the Education Department
In particular, DeSantis pledged to reverse policies related to transgender sports and the infusion of certain curricula into schools. He also advocated for a revamped accreditation system for higher education that would not promote concepts such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT).
A Conservative Victory, Regardless of the Outcome
DeSantis framed his plans as a victory for conservatives, irrespective of whether Congress agrees to eliminate the departments or not. If successful, it would result in a smaller government. However, if met with resistance, he would strategically wield these agencies to push back against what he perceives as the encroachment of left-wing ideology.
