AOC and Crenshaw Join Forces to Support Troops’ Access to Innovative Treatments for PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries

Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) have formed an unlikely partnership to advocate for the use of psychedelic drugs as a potential treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, and depression among military personnel. Both representatives believe that the current treatment options available for these conditions are inadequate, and they are working towards providing better resources for service members who are struggling with these issues.

Research and data have shown promising results in using psychedelic treatments to address PTSD and traumatic brain injuries, leading to the collaboration between Ocasio-Cortez and Crenshaw. Crenshaw, a Navy SEAL veteran who personally experienced the benefits of psychedelics, despite their illegal status in the United States, shared stories of friends finding relief from their ailments through these treatments.

To bring about change in this area, the duo focused their efforts on the National Defense Authorization Act. While they were able to include a modified version of their bill in the legislation, Crenshaw remains dedicated to working with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to secure comprehensive funding and conduct clinical trials in future versions of the bill. Ocasio-Cortez has called on veterans to rally behind this cause and put pressure on the Senate for the provision’s approval.

Recognizing the significant influence of the veteran community, Ocasio-Cortez encourages them to raise their voices and advocate for improved treatment options for military personnel suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. The unexpected partnership between Ocasio-Cortez and Crenshaw exemplifies their shared determination to make a difference in the lives of those who have served.
