Assistant Secretary for Health, Rachel Levine, commends Identity Alaska, a gender clinic in Alaska, for their commitment to promoting a more inclusive understanding of biological sex. Levine visited the clinic on August 6 to show support for their mission in creating a more equitable healthcare landscape.
Identity Alaska has introduced an initiative called “gender-inclusive biology” that focuses on providing alternative definitions for gender and sexuality-related terms. The initiative aims to educate elementary school students on concepts related to gender and sexual attraction, emphasizing the use of precise language for bodily functions without subscribing to a binary approach to biological sex.
One of the significant proposals put forth by Identity Alaska is to replace the term “mother” with more neutral alternatives like “gestational parent,” “birth parent,” “egg producer,” or “carrier.” For example, instead of saying “when the mom gives birth,” the curriculum suggests saying “when the baby exits the womb.”
The initiative also advises against using terms such as “male hormones” and “female hormones,” recommending the use of “testosterone” and “estrogen” instead. Additionally, it encourages the use of more inclusive language, like referring to “those with ovaries” and “those with testicles,” rather than gender-specific terminology.
However, these proposals have sparked debates about the potential consequences of altering scientific terminology. Critics argue that such changes may lead to confusion or misrepresentation of biological concepts. They believe that scientific accuracy should not be compromised in the pursuit of inclusivity.
